Samuel E. Upchurch, Jr.
Chairman of the Board
Mr. Upchurch serves in the Executive Position as Chairman of the Board of Directors and, along with the CEO,
oversees all facets of the Bank's operations. Mr. Upchurch's experience includes: 6 years in private legal
practice with a major Alabama law firm; 10 years with Torchmark Corporation and United Investors Management
Company, where he served as a member of the Board of Directors and the chief legal officer; and 12 years
experience with Regions Financial Corporation. During his time at Regions, Mr. Upchurch served in various
management roles including: Chief Legal Counsel; Regional CEO, with responsibility for the banking operations
in Alabama, the Panhandle of Florida and East Tennessee; Director of Corporate and Strategic Initiatives; and
Head of the General Bank, with overall responsibility for the banking operations of Regions.
Scott B. Reed
Senior Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Reed is responsible for the overall growth, profitability, and strategic direction for Oakworth Capital
Bank. Mr. Reed previously worked 16 years with Regions Financial Corporation. At Regions, he most recently
served as a Group President for Central Alabama where he had responsibility for overall profitability of
banking and ancillary operations of a $7 billion business unit. Prior to that, Mr. Reed served in varying
capacities including Chief Administrative Officer for Strategic Planning for Regions Financial Corporation,
Retail Executive for Central Alabama, Head of Business Banking for Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from
Auburn University with a degree in Finance and earned his Masters in Public and Private Management from
Birmingham Southern College. He is also a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, With Honors.
Ronald C. Jackson
Managing Director, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Jackson is the chief financial officer and a member of the board of directors of Oakworth Capital Bank.
Mr. Jackson has almost 33 years experience in the financial services industry, having served as Corporate
Controller, Chief Accounting Officer and Director of Investor Relations for Regions Financial Corporation.
While in the financial services industry, Mr. Jackson obtained expertise in accounting and auditing, financial
reporting, budgeting and planning, risk management, and merger and acquisition analysis and integration.
He graduated from Auburn University and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Sam A. Scalici, Jr.
Managing Director, Head of Banking
Mr. Scalici oversees all banking services and is a member of the board of directors for Oakworth Capital Bank.
Mr. Scalici's experience includes 16 years with Regions Financial Corporation. During that time, he had
responsibilities as a commercial banker, bank president, Director of Business Banking for the Central region
and Head of Business Banking for the 16 state footprint. Mr. Scalici graduated from Auburn University with a
degree in Finance. He earned his Masters in Public and Private Management from Birmingham Southern College as
well as his graduate degree in banking from Louisiana State University Banking School.
Forest W. Whatley, Jr.
Managing Director, Head of Risk and Credit
Mr. Whatley is responsible for risk management and is the Chief Credit Officer for Oakworth Capital Bank.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Whatley has 21 years of experience in the financial
services industry having worked with First Commercial Bank for 11 years and Bank of America for 7 years.
During that time, he served as a Senior Group Executive for risk management, Chief Credit Officer, Senior
Group Executive for retail banking, commercial lender, private banking lender, and branch manager. Mr.
Whatley graduated from Auburn University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business
Administration with a major in Finance.
Luther J. Strange, III
Organizer, Director
Mr. Strange is an attorney and founder of Strange LLC, a law firm based in Birmingham, Alabama. Prior to founding Strange LLC, he was a partner with the law firm of Bradley Arant Rose & White. Mr. Strange is a prominent lawyer and civic leader active in Alabama. He is a graduate of Tulane University where he was a scholarship basketball player. Mr. Strange also graduated from Tulane Law School. In the year between college and law school, Mr. Strange worked in the Merchant Marine in the North Sea. He is an Eagle Scout and Rotarian. Mr. Strange is regarded as one of Alabama's leading economic development lawyers and frequently advises companies on growth and expansion opportunities in the state. In this role, he led his firm's team in the deal that brought the $1 billion Hyundai automotive plant to Montgomery. For years, Mr. Strange has been very active in Republican Party politics and maintains an active schedule of events focused on building the Republican Party in Alabama. In 2006 he was the Republican Nominee for Lt. Governor of Alabama.
Robert (Randy) A. Reed
Organizer, Director
Mr. Reed is founder and President of ABC Polymer Industries, a diversified plastics manufacturing company located in Helena, Alabama. Prior to forming his own company, Mr. Reed served in executive positions with National Bank of Commerce and AmSouth Bank. He is a founding board member of the Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation. Mr. Reed's professional affiliations include The Downtown Rotary Club; Monday Morning Quarterback Club; and he is also a member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and the Society of International Business Fellows. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Finance from Auburn University in 1989 and also earned his Masters in Public & Private Management from Birmingham Southern College in 1993.
Richard (Rick) D. Horsley
Organizer, Director
Mr. Horsley was the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Financial Officer of Regions Bank and Regions Financial Corporation prior to his retirement in December 2006. At Regions he served as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer from 2002 until mid-2005 with responsibilities for all of the revenue generating operations at Regions including Regions Bank and Morgan Keegan. Mr. Horsley began his career in 1972 as Comptroller for Regions Bank. He has been involved in various banking organizations, including teaching at Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. His professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Rotary Club of Birmingham. He serves on the Board of Trustees for Samford University; the Board of Visitors at the University of Alabama; and is a Board member of the Nature Conservancy. Mr. Horsley received his Bachelor's of Science degree in Industrial Management from the University of Alabama in 1964.
E. Lyle Cain, Jr., M.D.
Director
Dr. Cain is a surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the Team Orthopedist for the University of Alabama and Medical Director for the University of West Alabama. Dr. Cain also works as the team orthopedist for the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox AA) Minor League baseball team and several local high schools. He has also been published in several medical journals and textbooks and speaks widely on the subject of Sports Medicine. Dr. Cain holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama where he also completed Medical School. He completed his education with a Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham.
Matthew G. Mead
Director
Mr. Mead is currently a Principal at Chickasaw Capital Management, LLC. He serves as a senior relationship manager, managing significant assets for clients of Chickasaw Capital. He started his investment management career with Goldman Sachs & Co.'s Private Wealth Management group in Memphis, where he served for 9 years and was a Vice President. Mr. Mead advises families with substantial wealth, specializing in equity portfolio management, income equity management, fixed income portfolio management, and single stock risk management. Mr. Mead received his B.S. from Birmingham-Southern College in 1990, double majoring in Economics and Finance. He received an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University in 1992.
William Morton
Director
Mr. Morton has been employed by his family owned business of Robins & Morton, a General Contracting firm specializing in health care, since 1987. Robins & Morton achieved a national ranking as one of Engineering New Record's list of Top 400 Contractors of 2007. Robins & Morton has also received a national ranking of second in Modern Healthcare magazine's list of 18 top contractors that build hospitals and other healthcare facilities. He is a Board Member of the Associated Builders & Contractors of Alabama; Baptist Health System Foundation; Greater Alabama Council of Boy Scouts; and the Birmingham Downtown Rotary Club. Mr. Morton is a 1987 graduate of Auburn University where he earned a degree in Building Science.
John B. Norris, V
Managing Director, Head of Wealth Management
Mr. Norris oversees the Wealth Management and investment services for the company. He has over 19 years
experience in the money management industry. Prior to joining Oakworth, Mr. Norris was Chief Economist,
Chairman of the Investment Strategy Committee, and a Senior Fund Manager for Regions Financial Corporation's
Morgan Asset Management (MAM) subsidiary. Prior to joining MAM, Mr. Norris served as Chief Investment Officer
for The Trust Company of Sterne, Agee & Leach, Inc. He started his professional career in 1991 with
Mercantile-Safe Deposit & Trust Company in Baltimore, Maryland, as an institutional fixed income portfolio
manager. Mr. Norris frequently appears in various national and local media as an expert on the economy and
the markets, and is currently a guest columnist to the Montgomery Advertiser's Sunday business section. He
was named to the Birmingham Business Journal's (BBJ) "Who's Who in Banking & Finance" for 2004, the BBJ's "Top
40 Under 40" for 2007, and Global Register's "Who's Who in Executives & Professionals" for 2006-2007.
He received his B.A. in 1990 from Wake Forest University, and his M.B.A. in 1994 from the University of
Baltimore.
David M. Driscoll
Managing Director, Head of Technology and Operations.
Mr. Driscoll oversees Technology and Operations for Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Driscoll has 18 years
experience in Technology and Operations within various industries. During that time he had responsibilities
as a Systems Specialist, Network Engineer, Technical Operations Manager, Assitant Director of Operations and
Director of Information Technology. Mr. Driscoll served as the Product Development Manager for Online Banking and Bill Payment services at SouthTrust Bank, N.A, where he oversaw all efforts related to the online banking channel. Mr. Driscoll served as the business lead for the SouthTrust/Wachovia Online Merger Integration. After the merger, Mr. Driscoll served as a Senior Product Development Manager in eCommerce
for Wachovia Bank. He received his B.A. in 1991 from Skidmore College.
James D. Williams
Managing Director, Commercial Banking
Mr. Williams helps manage Oakworth Capital's commercial banking offering. Mr. Williams has over 21 years of total banking experience including over 9 years’ total experience with Regions Financial Corporation, serving in capacities of both commercial and private banking, as well as 9 years’ commercial lending experience with First Commercial Bank, an affiliate of Synovus Financial Corporation. Mr. Williams has structured transactions for many different types of clients in various industries ranging from local privately held companies to larger publicly held institutions. He has always been known for his focused, accommodating, service oriented approach to a banking relationship. Mr. Williams graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Mr. Williams earned his Master of Business Administration also from the University of Alabama.
Michael D. Mims
Managing Director, Private Banking
Mr. Mims serves as a client advisor and manages the private banking services at Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Mims’ experience includes 16 years as the owner of a local hardware and building supply company prior to transitioning to the financial services industry. His financial experience includes seven years with SouthTrust Bank serving in various capacities within the finance, audit, and wealth management divisions and three years with First Commercial Bank as vice-president and team leader within the private client group. Mr. Mims has experience providing financial services to professional and corporate executives as well as small to mid tier commercial clients. Mr. Mims graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He earned his Master of Business Administration from Samford University, and holds the professional designation of Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
Janet Ball
Managing Director, Wealth Management
Ms. Ball oversees personal trust services for Oakworth Capital Bank. In this capacity, she is directly responsible for the day-to-day administration of various types of trusts and investment agency accounts established by or for the benefit of high net worth individuals and their families, charitable entities, and corporations. Ms. Ball is experienced in trust and estate administration working previously at Compass Bank and Synovus Trust Company. Ms. Ball graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Ms. Ball also attended Southern Trust School.
J. Trent Green
Associate Managing Director, Treasury Management
Mr. Green's area of responsibility will include Treasury Management products, sales, and support.
Mr. Green has been in banking 10 years with both Regions Financial Corporation and Compass Bank.
His work experience includes retail banking, Treasury Management, and Private Banking. He served as
Assistant Vice President in Treasury Management for Regions Financial Corp with a sales area that included
central Alabama and non footprint National Corp. Banking clients. He also served as Vice President and
relationship manager in Private Banking at both Regions Bank and Compass Bank. Mr. Green has held the
professional designation of Certified Treasury Manager (CTP) since 2001.
Associate Managing Director, Commercial Banking
Mr. Johnson works with Oakworth Capital's commercial banking services. Mr. Johnson has been in banking 9 years with both Regions Financial Corporation and RBC Bank (formerly First American Bank). His work experience includes internal audit, retail and commercial banking, and most recently, market executive. Mr. Johnson has experience managing commercial client relationships up to $125mm in revenue size. He graduated from Auburn University Montgomery with a degree in finance and earned his Master of Arts in Public and Private Management from Birmingham Southern College.
Ginny M. Paul
Associate, Wealth Management
Ms. Paul serves as an investment and trust professional in the Wealth Management department. She has
over eight years of wealth management experience. Ms. Paul was most recently employed at Colonial Bank as a
Portfolio Manager in the Wealth Management department. Her career began at Morgan Asset Management as an
Equity Analyst, and later as a Portfolio Manager and Assistant Fund Manager of the Regions Morgan Keegan
Large Cap Value Fund. Ms. Paul graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in finance.
