Based on an analysis of data from more than 6,500 banks across the country, Sageworks, a financial information company, identified the healthiest banks in the United States by their Texas Ratio. Some Common Cents for March 27th 2015

March 30, 2015, by John Norris

On Thursday afternoon, the President was in Birmingham, and outlined some of his Administration’s plans to impose greater regulatory oversight on what is known as the “payday loan” industry. Why Birmingham? Well, we have a lot of the places in our metro area and state, I mean a whole lot, an embarrassing amount really. In some sections of town, they are one of the few open businesses, apart from maybe a thrift store and a...

Maybe Starbucks should focus on coffee

March 26, 2015, by John Norris

The primary goal of any corporation is to turn a profit. It isn’t much more complicated than that. So, if being more socially vocal results in higher earnings, expect more corporations to be so. If it doesn’t, look for companies to be quiet. I have a friend who went to a James Taylor concert some years ago. If you know anything about Taylor, you know he is a talented musician who is pretty free and...

Some Common Cents for March 20th 2015

March 20, 2015, by John Norris

This week, a friend forwarded an article by Porter Stansberry to me. In case the name isn’t familiar, Stansberry is a financial commentator who made a lot of hay a few years ago by predicting the impending bankruptcies of GM, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac. In truth, folks had been discussing GM’s inevitable restructuring for years, and the question wasn’t whether Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s balance sheets were upside down; the question was whether...

Assets up, profits flat for Bham banks in 2014

, by John Norris

Most Birmingham banks reported an uptick in assets last year, but profits remained flat, according to the latest data from the FDIC. With lending picking up at many institutions, total assets for Birmingham banks rose by $12.4 billion in 2014 – a gain driven primarily by Birmingham's biggest banks. Regions Bank, Birmingham's largest bank, finished the year totaling $118.6 billion in assets, up from $116.6 billion in 2013. BBVA Compass increased its assets from $71.7...

Strong dollar can hurt U.S. businesses

March 16, 2015, by John Norris

Whenever you hear a politician talk about the need to have a strong dollar, please change the channel or put your hands over your ears. The value of the dollar has nothing to do with sound bites and grand political pronouncements. It has everything to do with how much U.S. currency the world wants. You see, even our money can’t escape the law of supply and demand. The more folks demand, the higher it goes...

Some Common Cents for March 13th 2015

March 13, 2015, by Shelley deClerk

This morning, I read an article about next week’s FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting, and the importance of semantics. All eyes on Wall Street will be fixated on the Fed’s statement after the meeting, and what it all means for future interest rate policy. The ensuing mental gymnastics will be as strenuous as executing a floor exercise wearing a 50 lb. weighted vest. Not that I have ever done that, of course. I can...

April Chamber speaker sheds light on 2015-16 economic outlook

March 12, 2015, by John Norris

Please see the article on John’s recent presentation to the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce. The reporter misquoted his comments on the trade deficit, but it's still good otherwise... Adding levity to the seemingly humorless topic of the nation’s economic health, Oakworth Capital Managing Director and Head of Wealth Management John Norris both informed and entertained Chamber luncheon members and guests during his March 10 address. “Technology isn’t going to come into work late on May...
