Some Common Cents for December 26th 2014

December 29, 2014, by John Norris

I learned something this holiday season: a songwriter named Johnny Marks wrote the now famous “Silver & Gold” Christmas tune specifically for the “Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer” TV special.  Originally, Larry D. Mann as Yukon Cornelius was to sing the song, but the duty fell on Burl Ives after he signed onto the project. Apparently, the same could be said of “Holly Jolly Christmas,” which really took off after Ives sang a somewhat slower version...

Some Common Cents for October 10th 2014

October 14, 2014, by John Norris

Last Friday, instead of writing this newsletter, I was in a jury deliberation room discussing the proximate cause of an elderly woman’s incontinence. So, on Sunday, I was kind of surprised to receive an email from someone taking issue with something I had written in Common Cents. After all, I hadn’t written one on Friday. It seems there is a darn good reason why I do what I do for a living, as opposed to...

Some Common Cents for September 27th 2013

A co-worker recently told me I have been a little too pessimistic about the economy recently. Some Common Cents for April 12, 2013

April 17, 2013, by Shelley deClerk

Last night, I made a presentation, ostensibly about economics. By the end of my allotted time, however, I had delved off into conjuncture and personal opinion which bordered on histrionics. What I said wasn’t wrong; it was anyone’s best guess, and it just so happened to be mine. Lets face it: if I could look into the future with crystal clarity, I probably wouldn’t have made that speech last night, you know? However, I was...

Common Cents for September 21st 2012

November 1, 2012, by John Norris

When is this rally going to end? That is what a lot of investors want to know. After all, the recent spike in stock prices has been a little, shall we say, surprising. If the economy is so weak the Federal Reserve feels the need to dump another couple hundred billion onto the fire, why then are investors so keen to buy equities? In a simpler time, this might not make sense; however, this is...
